Old Town Christmas Market & Heidelberg Castle Christmas
On
the last November Wednesday Heidelberg's traditional Christ Child
flanked by angels
will open the annual festive Christmas Market in Old Town Heidelberg.
For
the next four weeks the charming baroque gingerbread city of Heidelberg
will glow with the magic of the Christmas season. And since 2010 the
famous Heidelberg Castle (see Castle
Heidelberg) joins in the holiday
spirit.
Heidelberg Christmas Markets
The
Christmas Market is actually spread over six squares of the
Old Town, each
with its own individual
character. Every day from 11 am. to 9 pm, over
140 stalls and booths present a tantalizing array of artistic crafts
and culinary delicacies. The separate markets reach from the hub
of Bismarck Square, with the "Anatomy Garden" around the
Bunsen statue across the old city. University Square with 70 individual
crafts booths is the largest of the markets. At Market Square, a giant
Christmas pyramid in the shape of the candelabra is surrounded by colourful
booths representing numerous clubs and associations of Heidelberg.
At the Corn Market you’ll find the Christmas Crèche beneath
the Corn Market Madonna, and at Karl's Square, just below the walls
of the castle, "Christmas on Ice" welcomes revellers seeking
the thrill of sport ice skating or simply a few circuits of skating
hand-in-hand beneath the romantic castle. Many Christmas Markets have
ice rinks, but here is one of the most beautiful of settings in Germany – with
real ice, not artificial. The ice skating rink will remain open through
January 9th.
In addition to the Christmas Market itself, a variety of events are held throughout the town bedecked by the charming chalet huts which make up the Heidelberg Christmas Market including an art exhibition of "Robert Sterl - a German Impressionist" in the Kurpfälzisches Museum, the Christmas tale "Gulliver's Travels" in the Opera Tent, the all-star Gala by Aids-Assistance-Heidelberg, and choral music concerts held in the Heidelberg’s churches.
Christmas at Heidelberg Castle
From Thursday
through Sunday, the 2nd of December to the 5th, the "Heidelberg
Castle Christmas" will be held in the garden of the castle. This
small but unique four-day inaugural Christmas Market at the Castle
presents visitors with handicrafts
and specialties, music performances, in its
special atmospheric ambience. Entrance to the concerts and activities
is included in the regular castle entrance fee of € 5, which also
entitles the ticket-holder to take the cable car to and from the castle
for free.
Christmas Market Tour
On Saturdays, take an enchanting guided stroll through the beautiful nooks and sights of the Old Town, from Market Square to University Square (see Old University Student Prison). At each stop along the way, special attractions and artistic craftworks can be admired while the guide relates the Christmas traditions in Heidelberg and the region. The tour ends with steaming cup of Heidelberg's original mulled wine. The tours meet at the Town Hall (Rathaus) entrance on Market Square. The regular tours are in German but a tour in English can be arranged.
