ITALY Bargain Travel Europe is dedicated to the idea that travel is about discovery. Here you’ll find the stories of destinations, things to do, see, and tips to save in Italy. Italy is one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations, visitors attracted to its food, culture, art, history, religion, and just plain mystique. Most who think of traveling to Italy, think of Rome or Venice - both magnificent cities of unforgettable sights - also crowded and expensive. A can of soda can cost $7 at the Coliseum and the throngs of tourists at the Trevi Fountain can be thicker than the pigeons. In Venice, a gondola ride can be $60. There is a lot more to Italy than Rome. Taste some of the best food in Italy in Bologna. Hunt for truffles in Piedmont at the foot of the Alps. Learn Italian in Puglia. Explore the castles of the Adige Valley in the shadows of the stunningly incredible sheer walls of the Dolomites. Discover the Northern Italian Lakes of Lombardy and the Italian Riviera Coast of Portofino. You can drive from the Alps to the Mediterranean beaches in a day or follow the Roman road through the Emilia Romagna. The trains of the national rail system Trentalia don’t always run on schedule, but will get you to many destinations in Italy with the rail stations in old town centers with a restaurant and ancient sight to visit rarely far away. An Italy Rail Pass can cover days of train journeys, but some trains in Italy, usually the Intercity and high speed trains, require a reservation fee. Train tickets can be bought at automatic machines. Make sure you stamp your tickets as you board. By car, Italians love to drive, the main autostrade system can cover distances in a hurry, but with toll booths at the exits with charges based on distance traveled. Don’t lose your ticket or you’ll pay the full distance of the road. Beware of the “T” lanes for Italian Telepass cars only, and watch for speed cameras. Take the side roads to save on tolls. Italians love cars and driving, but keep an eye for motorcycles which can bomb around the mountain curves. The road system in the north is generally better than the south. For Italy by bus, check Eurolines. The North of Italy can be combined easily with other European countries on its borders, the French Azur Coast, the Switzerland and Austrian Alps, as well as southern Germany and the Adriatic Sea.
