FRANKFURT RED LIGHT DISTRICT
The Bahnhofsviertel

Police Car on Frankfurts Eros district photoPerhaps is because of the money, perhaps natural location, perhaps if you’re the center of business development, why not the world’s oldest business. In many of Germany’s big cities you’re likely to find a somewhat subdued building not far from a train station with red or blue lights glowing in all the windows, rather like a holiday symbol, but here the signature of another kind.

In Frankfurt, no girls in windows like nautical naughty Hamburg (see Hamburg Reeperbahn) or outside the city like more prudish Munich, here the zone takes up nearly four blocks. Building after building a few streets from the main rail station, the Bahnhof Quarter. Frankfurt is not historically a tourists’ town but a businessman’s town, and with all that business money, it’s maybe not surprising that the real estate to serve that expense account traffic naturally grew to a substantial breadth. Within steps of the Hauptbahnhof and a short taxi ride or a couple of tram stops from the Frankfurt Messe convention center, the district comes alive with people when the sky turns dark. One of the busiest parts of the city after hours, especially when there’s a football match out at the Commerzbank stadium (see Frankfurt Stadium City Guide). A party might even spill out of a club into the street. Police called to quell the disturbance. No violence, just rowdy beer fueled testosterone exuberance.

The district is a mix of establishments called Eros Centers, the multi-story buildings of four or five floors with the glowing lights, not only red lights but blue, line the streets side by side, surrounded by night clubs with table dancing and champagne bars, the familiar and exotic - the Miami Sauna Club, Stars, and America, some with no name, only a sign “girls” with an arrow. No need to know the local language. Or actually you can wander about just to enjoy the heady atmosphere but no window shopping, the windows are all blacked out.

The district is safe and really just part of the city life, bright and colorful like a theme park of adult delights with shops and restaurants just around the corner. Whatever pops your cork. © Bargain Travel Europe
