WINE FESTIVALS IN GERMANY
August and September in the Rhineland by Rail

Mainz Wine Market photoGermany’s festival season is perhaps better known for its beer fairs, but wine growing and wine-making actually takes up more of the country-side than hops and late August and September is the time for Germany’s Wine Festivals. The wine events are spread throughout Germany’s baker’s dozen of thirteen wine producing regions, but the most compact region is along the Rhine and Mosel in the central west of the country. Get to know the German locals at a festival, where you’ll undoubtedly find a friendly conversation with the folks at the next table or the proud wine-maker, discussing the local harvest. Soak up the cheerful atmosphere, make some new acquaintances and try a variety of the vintages for just the expense of a few euros. And with a rail pass for the convenience of the train system (see How Rail Passes Work), close enough to wander from one to another, and never have to worry about drinking and driving.
