CHÂTEAU
DE FLEURVILLE
Hotel and Restaurant on Southern Burgundy Wine Road
The
Burgundy region of central France is known for its wines. The Route
des Grand Crus in the north
of the
Burgundy appellations runs from
Dijon to Beaune (See Chateau
Marsannay) and the Route des Vins
de Bourgogne runs north from Mâcon. The north Burgundy region
is more noted for its red wines while in the south with towns named
Chardonnay,
Chablis
and Poully-Fusse, is recognized as the land of the whites. The small
quiet town of Fleurville is about half-way between Mâcon and
Tournus along the west bank of the Saone River which forms the boundary
of the
Burgundy wine growing region between the Saone and the Loire.
The
Château de Fleurville,
with its distinctive single turret, originally the rural home of the
Comtes de Fleurville built in 1624, beautifully restored since 2000,
offers a convenient and charming base to explore the vineyards, castles,
museums
and majestic medieval abbeys of the southern Bourgogne (See Abbey
Cluny and Chateau
de Cormatin).
Serving essentially as a minor noble family's farmhouse
for much of its 400 years of existence, the Chateau has been turned into
an elegant hotel for accommodation and dining in noblity style at a non-regal
price by proprietors Pasqual and France Lehmann who personally manage
the property. The rooms start at around €90 to €200 and €250-300
for an apartment suite.
The hotel has 14 rooms, sumptuously
furnished in 17th-18th century style, most of which are in the original
historic
portion of the chateau, some
with sun balconies or a shared terrace. The flowered and tree covered
grounds hide a pool, tennis court and a helicopter pad, in case any modern “comptes” come
to visit. The restaurant offers fine dining with an emphasis on “sauveur” cuisine
and local Burgundy appellation wines. The Château de Fleurville
is listed as one of the Chateau & Hotels
de France group and is located just off the A6 Lyon-Dijon motorway on
the RN 6. The TGV rail station at Mâcon is 15 kilometers away,
close enough for a taxi ride, but if you’ve left your helicopter
at home, rent a car to explore the narrow country roads that wind through
the vineyard hills. © Bargain
