BMI’S MANCHESTER GATEWAY TO THE UK
British Midlands Airlines to England

bmi British Midlands photoLooking for an alternative flying to England rather than the madness of Heathrow or rush of Gatwick. Fly into Manchester on bmi (they prefer lower-case). This midsize British airline began in the 1930’s as a company training RAF fighter pilots while today bmi makes 1,700 flights every week to 36 airports in the UK and Europe, India, Saudi Arabia and operates transatlantic flights to the United States and Caribbean. Some of bmi routes are being folded into British Airways.

Las Vegas - Manchester

Las Vegas bmi gate non-stop to Manchester photoI recently took a flight on bmi from Las Vegas direct to Manchester. Since I live in the sprawling suburban madness that is Los Angeles, I had to get myself to Las Vegas, which required an extra flight, but provided a little sin city one armed bandit gambling time before departure. Depending on your luck or interests this may or may not be an advantage, but can make for an opportunity to add a day or two of Las Vegas to a European vacation trip, or business if the boss doesn’t look too close at the expense sheet. bmi also flies to Manchester direct through Chicago with code share connections on United. bmi also operates a low cost discount airline bmibaby to compete with the like of Ryanair and Easyjet.

First Class Business Class lounge Las Vegas photobmi doesn't have an official First Class, but rather flies a two class airplane, Business Class which equals their first class and Economy, although bmi splits in coach into two classes, offering a Premium Economy fare, which is becoming more common with air carriers of all stripe. Premium Economy has more leg room seating in the forward section of Coach, about 6 inches more on bmi, with it's own bathrooms separate from the rear coach section, complimentary cocktails, less baggage restriction and shorter lines at check-in with is own Priority Check-In counter and use of the Business Class Executive lounge. bmi's Premium Economy is one the most generous of features among the airlines offering this service, making it feel like an entirely separate class of service. The premium economy is a good value option if the business class isn’t in your budget or on your expense account.

bmi has the best on-time record of of any airline flying from London Heathrow, which though not their home airport is the hub to many of their destinations. The home port of Manchester International is a much easier arrival point than Heathrow. Just for the passport check point alone. From Manchester you can continue on to the rest of Europe or explore the less discovered north of England. bmi operates flights to European destinations through Manchester and Heathrow.

If you've done London and are looking to explore a different part of England, or just want an alternative experience in the UK, the England's North offers a whole variety of lesser explored destinations. Manchester is a vibrant city emerging from its former industrial reputation into an exciting urban adventure with a rich nightlife and lots of history to discover, in nearby Liverpool as well. England's famed Lake District is about two hours drive from Manchester and Yorkshire with its dales (see Ripley Castle and Boarshead Inn) and with its moors and haunting coastline to the east and Alton Towers Theme Park..

Manchester International Airport is the UK’s third largest, with three terminals and 100 airlines operating. Transportation to Manchester and other city destinations in the North of England, York, Leeds, Newcastle, Windermere in the Lake District and Chester can be found at “The Station” with rail, bus and taxi connections under one roof. Rail service to Maqnchester Piccadilly Station runs every 10 minutes with a 15-20 minute travel time. Prices for the train to Manchester range from £2.65 to £8.80 depending on class and time of day. For car rental, the terminal for US transatlantic flights is right across the street from the car rental garage, just walk out the door. The drive from the airport to Manchester takes about 20 minutes in traffic provided you manage to negotiate the roundabouts in the right direction. © Bargain Travel Europe
