ALSACE AUBERGE INNS
Eagle and Wine near and Castle Haut Koenigsbourg

Alsace Wine Route Aurberge Hotels Near Haut Koenigsbourg photoWandering the romantic wine route of Alsace (see Route-Des-Vins Alsace) between Strasbourg and Colmar in eastern France, one wonders where to hesitate and hang the travelers hat for the night or a few days. One of the must see stops of any list of the area is the great castle of Haut Konigsbourg (see Haut Koenigsbourg French Fairy Tale Castle), perched high above the valley between the Rhine River (Bas Rhin) of Alsace and the thick forested Vosges Mountains of Lorraine. There are two routes up to the castle from the valley side, one leads from Kintzheim a small mountain-side suburb of Selestat and the other leads through St. Hippolyte toward Colmar. A favorite tourist area for French as well as international travelers each of the villages have a few Alsatian style auberge style restaurant inns hotels in quaint local style in small towns filled with local wine tasting vendors and jumping off point for mountain hiking, biking and wine touring.

In Saint-Hippolyte, the Hotellerie Munsch with its restaurant the Aux Ducs de Lorraine (Dukes of Lorraine) is a popular wine road hotel in the traditional family inn style. Located at the edge of the small village in the midst of surrounding vineyards, there are 40 rooms, many with balconies and views of the mountains. The fine restaurant is a bit pricey and the hotel can get booked up in the high summer season, but receives high marks from visitors. The hotel is in a historic style but was built in the 1920’s to match the local historical architecture of the region. Hotel Munsch

Auberge Deux Clefs Kintsheim photoIn Kintzheim at the base of the mountain where Haut Konigsbourg can sometimes be lost in the clouds in colder season, the Auberge Aux Deux Clefs (Inn of the Two Keys) is a much older historic structure dating from the early 1500’s, originating as a family house built around the same time as the mighty castle above. The Aux Deux Clefs of Kintzheim is smaller and intimate in the old world inn style, with only 10 rooms with very budget friendly room rates. (There is also a Hotel Deux Clefs in the town of Turkheim near Colmar, but that's a different one). The restaurant is a popular feature of Kintzheim, with its terrace views and unique Alsatian meals around a camp fire concept for families in cool evenings. The restaurant hosts weddings and special events as well. Auberge Aux Deux Clefs

Medieval Church of St. George Kintzheim photoA short distance above Kintzheim, standing just over the village, the ruins of the medieval castle of Chateau Kintzheim is home to the Volerie des Aigles, one of France's best raptor and eagles falconry show with daily demonstrations of a variety of birds of prey, including eagles, falcons, owls and condors presented on the grounds of the castle. The shows at Volerie des Aigles are presented in the afternoons during the week from spring to fall Wine Route Kintsheim Bas Rhinand on the weekends all year at the Kintzheim Castle and a visit to Castle Haut Konigsbourg can be managed in one day. Also in Kintzheim plan a stop at the Eglise de St. George, the original town church with its beautiful tile roof tower from the 12th Century. The main part of the church was rebuilt in the 17th Century, but the stone defensive walls with remaining archery key holes which originally surrounded the medieval town now defend from the ever encroaching peaceful wine vineyards. © Bargain Travel Europe
