LE MAS DU LUBERON HOTEL AND RESTAURANT
Vineyard Hotel Romance in Provence
The
Provence - Alps Maritime region of southern France spanning the azure
coast from the inland country is a rolling hill and low mountainous landscape
above of the Mediterranean “Riviera”, flattening out into
the valley of the Rhone River. Luberon is the section along the Luberon
Massif mountain range and the valley below to the east of Ain-en-Provence,
an area of quaint small towns tucked into the sun and wild flower dappled
hillside valleys of Provence east of the Rhone popular among world travelers
for that famed Provencal sunshine. The Luberon life was recently featured
in the Ridley Scott-Russell Crowe film "A Good Year" based
on a Peter Mayle book companion to his "A Year in Provence".
The charming small hotel and restaurant of Le
Mas et la Flambée
du Luberon is located in a tiny old village of Venelles
halfway between the Luberon hills and Aix-en-Provence, right in the midst
of
the wine grape growing “terroirs” of Provence. From the hotel
you can wander the wine roads of Provence to vineyards of the Coteaux
Aix-en-Provence (see Provence-Avignon
Wine Road), Palette, Côtes
du Luberon, Cassis and Les Baux de Provence. The hotel offers wine tasting
on the premises along with local Provencal cuisine at its fine Savour
at La Flambée restaurant. In the cool off-season you can sit by
the fire or in the Provence sunny summer, find a place on the shady terrace
with a view of the Le Luberon . The restaurant wine list has over 250
vintages from local wineries and other famed regions of France to sample
with a seasonal changing menu. The list also offers bottles of rare
prestige vintages from Latour, Mouton Rothshild and the Hospice de Beaune
(See Beaune
Wine and Madonna).
Rooms
at the Le Mas et la Flambée du Luberon are uniquely decorated
in a Mediterranean theme in the bright colors of Provencal style and
each has a private entrance for that secret “rendezvous
d’amour” or just quiet comings and goings. All year long
the hotel offers theme “Discovery Weekends”. The hotel is
10 minutes from Aix-en-Provence with its famous fountains and weekly
produce markets, 45 minutes from the Verdon Gorges with its river rafting,
hiking and rock climbing, and the Napoleonic
Road to the coast (see Route
Napoleon). In Venelles perched on a high
promontory of Haut Vennelles you can visit the ruins of the medieval
castle with its look-out view pointt from where you can peer over the
Luberon valley and the mountain of Saint Victoire, a favorite painting
subject of Cezanne.
Nice and Cannes are about two hours by car or rail
and Avignon an hour. Prices as of 2008 are 102 € for 2 people in
mid-season spring and fall. 114 € July and August. To get there
from Aix-en-Provence, take the A51 autoroute to the Venelles exit, go
through the village, turn left at the fountain circle and take the small
street down into the old village. © Bargain
