For a first time tourist to Wales or the returning already enchanted visitor the Welsh travel organization and American Airlines has combined for a savings offer to visit Wales in the cooler months from January to March. With the current dollar to pound exchange rate at close to $1.50 to £1, down from approximately 2 to 1 only a few months ago, and the lowest its been in almost 20 years, a journey to discover Wales may be a trip not to miss. American Airlines® is offering a special discount valid for travel from any destination in the 48 contiguous United States to the UK for up to two people for travel between January 12, 2009, and March 12, 2009 ($540 including Taxes and Fee from New York). The discounted airfare is combined with winter savings offers from TravelWales. For a discount code, simply sign up at www.travelwales.org by January 10.

A full day tour with SeeWales tours with a 20% winter discount, for exploring stunning Welsh landscapes in a luxury minibus with an expert guide. They have daily departures from downtown Cardiff, with four tour options during the week taking in the highlights of South Wales from castles and a trip down a mine to exploring the Brecon Beacons National Park. Stay in Wales’ capital Cardiff - starting from just £19 a night with many hotels offering low off-season rates.

Jolyons Boutique Hotel in the heart of Cardiff offers all three-night bookings a fourth night for free from January through March 2009. The six individually–designed rooms are each priced differently, but start at just £89 for two. A four night stay is just £267 ($420) including a full Welsh style breakfast and taxes. That's $400 off on a comparable stay during peak-season. For winter budget accomodation deals 18 TravelLodge hotels are offering a low £19 a night through all January 2009. Prime locations featuring these quality and great value rooms include Cardiff, Swansea, Pembroke, Holyhead and Bangor.

On the luxury end, Portmeirion is offering a “Banish the January Blues” package, priced at £99 a night for two people, dinner, bed and breakfast for a savings of well over 50%. Portmeirion, ‘The Village’ in the 60’s cult TV series, The Prisoner, is where Noel Coward wrote his most winsome play Blithe Spirit, George Harrison celebrated his 50th birthday, and where royalty - from Edward VIII to King Zog of Albania sought to escape from the world. It is an ideal place to start a New Year and be inspired by the fanciful architecture of Clough Williams-Ellis. The package is available from January 4 – February 5, 2009.

The Penhelig Arms, a waterfront inn located in Aberdyfi on the west coast provides special winter rates through March 31, 2009, a twin or double room is £140 for two people sharing, including tax dinner, bed and breakfast. Guests staying for three nights get the third night free (they just pay for dinner on the third night). Llangoed Hall, an elegant country house hotel in a Jacobean mansion in the Brecon Beacon National Park, is offering winter sale rates from January 2 through March 11, 2009 from £99 a night. The Swansea Marriott Hotel in South Wales offers an ‘Advance Purchase Rate’ at weekends with a rate of £89 to £110 per night per room, subject to availability. The offer is valid on stays until April 1, 2009. For golf enthusiasts who want bragging rights to the Celtic Manor Resort’s championship Twenty Ten Course before the crowds arrive for Ryder Cup 2010, there is a “Winter Two Course Stay and Play” package is available through the end of February 2009 featuring a rate of £79 per person including accommodation, full Welsh breakfast and two rounds of golf – 18 holes each.

Wales’ celebrated Bodysgallen Country House Hotel is offering “The Ultimate Luxury Spa Champagne Break.” Getting out the calculator will reveal getting accommodation, tea, a dining allowance, spa privileges, a half bottle of Louis Roederer Champagne, along with admission to one of the nearby castles can be had for less than the normal cost of just a room.
