BEER AND OKTOBERFEST MUSEUM
Munich’s Bier and Festival History Year Round

Bier Oktoberfest Museum Munich Altstadt photoMunich is famous for its Oktoberfest, the world' largest and best known beer folk festival of carnival rides and boisterous beer halls. The official Oktoberfest, which curiously mostly takes place in September, (see Oktoberfest Munich’s Big Family Party), only lasts for 16 days, but for visitors to Munich the rest of the year, a stop at the Beer and Oktoberfest Museum in central old town Munich is worth a stop for a little beer and festival history. Housed in Munich’s oldest residential building from the 14th Century with some of its original wooden beams still visible and restored façade paintings from 1340 on its walls, the little museum that was once a tavern and home of a beer drinking club founded by the proprietor of the Lowenbrau tent at Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest History imageIn the intimate museum, explore the history of beer, which goes back to the Pharaohs of Egypt and kings of Babylonia. Learn of the purity laws of Bavaria which made its beers, orginally brewed by monks (see Munich’s Stark Beer Days) and later royal purveyors, so well regarded. The “Munchner Oktoberfestmuseum” takes up the third floor, while the fourth floor is devoted to changing exhibitions as well as a short movie introduction to the history of the Oktoberfest held at the Theriesen Wiese festival grounds and it origins as a wedding celebration for King Ludwig I’s bride Princess Theresa.

Beer Museum Stuberl photoAfter exploring the museum, you can stop at the tavern pub restaurant on the ground floor for a real cold Bavarian beer and a bite of wurst. The Beer and Oktoberfest Museum on Sterneckerstr. 2 is located on a side street a few blocks to the east of the Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt off Westenriederstrasse. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 1pm to 5pm. The restaurant is open from 6pm to midnight. Museum admission is 4€ for adults and a family ticket is available for only 6€. Saves for more beer. © Bargain Travel Europe
