BRUSSELS
Autumn European Style

Brussels Grand Place Town Hall Night photoBrussels is famous for its architecture, style and design, from the futuristic Atomium (see Atomium Bruparck) to the Grand Place. Spires are just as towering as modern glass skyscrapers but cute and boutique shops define the chocolatiers and fashion houses. Brussels is a city of contrasts, French against Flemish, old versus new, but somehow it all comes together in a city with a buzz, a movement, an atmosphere that encourages frivolity, not to mention regular drinking and outdoor dining in the old city, music concerts which light the spires of iconic town hall. There is always something going on. If you are planning to visit Brussels, here are some of the events, attractions, sights and sounds you can look forward to.

Cartoon Sculpture on Brussels Street photoIn keeping with Brussels’ keen eye for design, every autumn the city hosts Brussels’ Design September showcasing the best in contemporary design, featuring food, workshops and shopping opportunities. On September 25th visitors can explore the insides of dozens of workshops run by Brussels’ best designers as part of Designers’ Open Doors. From Magritte (see Magritte Museum Brussels) to Herge, artistic Brussels fuses surrealism with comic strip art as well as music, dance and theatre. See this for yourself at Brxl Bravo where art forms join metaphorical hands in October to create an artistic program of performances and exhibitions. Look out for the themed balls and open-air concerts.

Belgians are very much into drinking and partying, and seeing as they produce some of the best beer in the world it’s no stretch to see why. If beer is your flavor of choice, visit Brussels in November for the public brewing session at Cantillon Brewery. From seven in the morning the Master Brewer demonstrates just how this brewery produces beer, something it has done since 1900. The bargain €5 entry fee includes beer tasting.

Seeing as the Belgians are a little quirky themselves, this is the perfect venue for a showcase of thousands of innovations and inventions from around the world. Mad hatters rub shoulders with professional scientists so it should make for an interesting event. If fashion is more your thing, head to Brussels in December; this is when Belgium’s fashion designers take over Brussels’ Palace and sell their threads at reduced prices – perfect for Christmas shopping, or getting something cool, trendy and unique for the office Christmas party. © Bargain Travel Europe
