ZURICH
FILM FESTIVAL - 2010
A Cinema Fest Star is Born For
the first few years of its existence, the Zurich Film Festival was a
bit of an
unknown quantity in the film world. Unknown, first
in its reception as to quality, and that much of the major commercial
film community didn’t know it existed. Certainly, not like the
long time staples of film debuts like Cannes, the Venice Film Festival,
Sundance, Toronto and the like. Then in 2009, as the festival in Switzerland’s
largest city was hitting its stride, they decided to present an award
to director Roman Polanksi. The rest, they say, is history. The festival
was turned on its head with the press coverage, rather un-nerving the
festival’s beautiful co-creator and managing director Nadja Schildknecht,
and programming chief Karl Spoerri with the crush of media attention.
Following the rule of no such thing as bad publicity, now, the Zurich
Film Festival is firmly on the map. For 2010, writer-director
Oliver Stone is presenting “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” as
the closing night film. Michael Douglas was to get the achievment
award that went to Polanski last year, but strange luck strikes again.
Michael
Douglas is fighting cancer, so Danny Devito will accept the award.
Zurich
is perhaps an ideal spot for an international film festival for a
major city, easy to get to, cosmopolitan atmosphere. A city soaked
in its own glamour and intrigue, all that money in numbered accounts,
probably a few spies running about swapping suitcases, ritzy shopping
and old world charm, a movie in itself. Zurich was where Lenin hung
out waiting for revolution and film lovers can hang out in the very
same spot at the famous Odeon Café, next to the main Film Festival
ticket office in a temporary tent set up during the festival. Ticket
kiosks can also be found throughout Zurich, which has embraced the
festival, celebrating film and visitors from around the world. This
year’s sixth edition will see Zurich transformed into an eleven-day
film festival capital celebrating the art of film.
Zurich Films Festival Dates for 2010, Sept 23 – Oct
3 Sixty new films
will be presented at the festival for 2010, shown mainly in the theaters
of the Cinema Corso, along the lake front in
old town Zurich, and the Arthouse Le Paris near the Bahnhofstrasse
shopping area, with several special gala premieres. The intent of the
Zurich Film Festival is to support and encourage young filmmakers from
around the world with the main award the “Golden Eye”,
presented to the best films in fiction and documentary and for the
best debut film, with an opportunity for upcoming filmmakers from around
the globe to the mix with the more established film industry and the
public through a variety of fringe events and parties. For
the best places to stay for the festival, since the venues are in
the
heart of town,
the whole array of Zurich hotels are available,
with easy transportation on the cities tram system. The central tram
station at Paradeplatz is directly across from the ticket center near
the Odeon and a block from the Corso Film Theaters. For star gazing,
if red carpets are crowded, the L’Oreal make-up station at Krug
Gasse square
just a block to the west of the ticket office, is where the visiting
stars may get a freshen up before the red carpet, (unless they dash
straight from the hotel and back into the limo). Advance tickets for
the festival films go on sale online or at the ticket booth on September
9th. © Bargain
