DICK TURPIN TOURS IN YORK
Ghost Walks and Ghostly Dinners by Candlelight

Dick Turpin Haunting Ghost Tours York photoJust what York needs, more Ghosts afoot! York is reputedly one of the most haunted cities in England and the originator of the “Ghost Walk”, an entertaining amble through the city with a raconteur guide telling of the dark and harrowing spooky events of the past. Follow spooky tales and evenings of candlelight regaled by stories of ghostly wanderings in one of York’s oldest and decidedly haunted inns, the Black Swan.

Black Swan Inn

Black Swan Inn Peashoms Green YorkDick Turpin was the famous romanticized highwayman hanged in York in 1739 for horse theft (see York Castle Museum). His grave can be found in York, and might have spent some of his evenings downing a pint with his accomplices at the Black Swan Inn. One of the rooms is named for the notorious robber made famous with the rise of the "penny dreadful" stories of the 19th Century. First built as a private residence by the merchant William Bowes when he was made Lord Mayor of York in 1417, The Black Swan Inn, of half-timber medieval style and dark oak beams bending under the weight of time operated as a coaching inn pub, with many a famous or infamous character passing through its doors over a 600 year history. It’s not surprising then, that a few of them have never left. Assorted paranormal events of glowing orbs and spectral sounds are a fairly common occurrence.

Ghost Walks and Historical Walks of York

Take your choice of a ghost walk or a more general historic walk through York, hearing of the rich tales and haunted history of York. All the ghosts walks for Dick Turpin Tours begin at the Black Swan Inn. Prices for the walks are £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. Ghost Walk Tours all meet at the Black Swan Inn at Peasholm Green, four minutes from the York Shambles, at 5:30 with tours beginning at 6pm. The walking tours around York return to the Black Swan for chance to tipple an ale with the casual spectral visitor. Food can be pre-ordered at the Inn for a meal by the inn’s roaring fire at the end of the tour, or just a drink at the bar before. Children are allowed in the inn and the walks.

Candlelit Ghost Dinners

The candlelit dinners begin as 7:30 pm and last until 10 pm and are for adults over 18 only. And they can host private parties for a minimum of 10 people. Make reservations though the website.
