BRUSSELS JAZZ MARATHON WEEKEND
Get Jazzed in Belgium this May

Brussels Jazz Marathon Grand Place Stage photoOver the last fifteen years the Brussels Jazz Marathon as taken over the European “Capital City” for a long weekend every spring. More than 400 musicians from single artists to international bands perform on the main squares of the city and in every corner of pubs, clubs, restaruants, and hotels. For three days, the street cafés of the central pedestrian zone fill with the crowds of revelers and afficianados enjoying the music which can seem to eminate from all corners of party town.

Brussels Sidewalk Restaurants Jazz Weekend photoThe festival main stage takes over the central city square in front of the iconic town hall, the Grand Place, with music beats and colorful light shows bouncing off the filigreed facades of the glorious old architecture for which the center of Brussels is famed. Light beams turn the old city into a magical wonderland, filled with vibant energy. Other outdoor stages can be found around the city at the Place du Sablon, the Place St Catherine and the Place Fernand Cocq, not to mention the indoor venues from intimate pub to performace hall - 125 concerts all together - and all for FREE.

Brussels Jazz Music Festival Dates for 2012, May 25-27

Jazz Festival Brussels Churchills Pub photoThe Brussels Jazz Festival is a three day music party, and despite the name, the music is not really strictly jazz. Yes, there is classic Jazz, Belgian Jazz, Modern Jazz, Latin Jazz and some old original New Orleans style, but many of the groups and performers can more readily be recognized as classic rock, folk rock, funk, blues, or just plain eclectic. Follow the schedule obtainable online or from city tourism offices and participating venues, or just wander on your own and be pulled in the direction which attracts your ear. Or follow the crowd.

Most of the stages and clubs can easily be reached on foot around the old town zone, but for more distant venues, special free Jazz Busses will provide cozy and easy transportation for music and party enthusiasts to get around. Many of the city’s hotels participate in the festival. Many bars and restaurants have outdoor seating within view of the main square stages or within earshot of many of the smaller venues. The best hotels to stay in are the city old town close to the pedestrian central zone, but public transportation is quite easy from outside the vieux ville. © Bargain Travel Europe
