WIENER WIESN
Vienna’s Version of Oktoberfest

Vienna Oktoberfest Wiener Wiesn Gosser Beer WagonSo you’ve always wanted to go to Oktoberfest, Munich's celebration of the glories of beer, with the brewery tents and the rides, but it so crowded and rooms are so expensive during the famous festival. The answer. Go to Austria instead. The Wiener Wiesn festival takes place about the same time, located in the Kaiserwiese Meadow in the Prater Park, in the shadow of the great Giant Ferris Wheel made famous in the “Third Man” movie (see Prater Wheel and the Third Man) for a fortnight September 27 through until October 7. Beer, wine, music make for an unforgettable party celebration.

Prater Ferris Wheel above Wiener Wiesn photoWiener Wiesn festival made its debut in 2011, and returns again with three giant marquee tents on the Kaiserwiese meadow with the largest from international Austrian beer brand, Gösser. Beyond the traditional beer tents, which can hold up to 2,500 guests, this year's event will feature an authentic Tyrolean Alpine Hut made from of Swiss Pine. The event will have a rich Austrian flavor, with Wiener Schnitzel (it does get its name from the city after all), sausage, roast pork. They even  have crispy pork knuckle on the menu, just in case you really miss the Bavarian slant, but the beer is all Austrian, and the wine is from Viennese producers.

Vienna Oktoberfest Alpine Hut photoEach day offers live musical entertainment in the different tent marquees - the 11-day program will present a total of 99 concerts for over 250 hours of music. The packed line-up of entertainment features Austrian and international acts such as Jürgen Drews, Marc Pircher, die Ursprung Buam and Die Edlseer. Come for the mash up mix of raucous Schlager Pop and traditional “oom pa pa” Volksmusik. Admission to the four beer tents at the Vienna festival is only with a valid table reservation and seat ticket, but access to the Wiener Wiesen festival site is free of charge. © Bargain Travel Europe
