GUTENBERG’S BIBLE AND
LITTLE GUT WEIN
Strasbourg to Heidelberg Johann
Gutenberg lived in Strasbourg France for 10 years before
inventing moveable type and changing the world in 1457, but he didn't
actually create his
printing press until he gave up on Strasbourg and returned to Mainz where
he was born. The Hotel
Gutenberg named for the famed printer, originally built in 1745 is just
off Gutenberg Square near where the Strasbourg shop was located. Should
you be heading back to Mainz where Gutenberg actually had his main
printing shop and where
the Gutenberg Museum is located (see Gutenberg
Museum Mainz),
following Gutenberg's footsteps, to search for a sample of one of his
bibles, take
a stop in Heidelberg, another name synonymous
with printing, for the Heidelberg printing press, the mechanical advancement
on Gutenberg's
invention. In
fact, Gutenberg was never able to capitalize on his invention and died
penniless. While the monster machines from Heidelberg developed in 1805
can be seen in printing shops around the world. But while you're reading
the old master's illustrated bible, sample some of Heidelberg's award
winning wine. The family-owned Seeger Winery (Seeger Weingut) founded
in 1707, received the German Award for the best burgundy for
its Heidelberger Herrenberg. Situated
in the heart of Germany's largest wine-growing region, Heidelberg has
a long tradition of wine
production. and its local varieties regularly receive awards. And stop
in the city's castle to see the world's largest wine barrel. But don't
fall in. ©Bargain
