POHO Design Hotel on Lake Lucerne Riviera
Weggis
has been called the center of the ”Riviera of Central Switzerland”.
Evidence of the mild climate from which this reputation comes for this
narrow strip of land along the eastern shore of Lake Lucerne, pressed
between the Alpine slopes can be detected in the inconguous palm trees
and orchids. For a over a hundred years, since the days of the “Grand
Tour” of Europe which brought the likes of Mark Twain to explore
Mi Rigi which rises behind the lakeside village (see Mt
Rigi Cog Railway),
Weggis has been one of the Lucerne region of Switzerland’s most
popular tourist stops, just enough out of the way and off the main routes
to
retain a
bit of
its former intimacy.
The Post Hotel Weggis, the POHO, as its nickname logo indicates is a
modern reincarnation of the former historic Post Hotel which stood opposite
the dock of the Lake Lucerne Cruise Boats. Now a modern structure built
in the 1980s, the remaining historic part of the hotel has been kept
intact in the small stubli bar with a century of pictures of Weggis town
fathers and famous figures, while the hotel proper is a truly inspired
design concept. Redesigned and decorated in a mix of 60s and 70s retro
meeting the contemporary by the current owners, inspired from the water
themes of New York photography artist Howard Schatz whose nymph-like
semi-nude women adorn the walls drifting underwater in chiffon colors.
From
first entrance up the broad reflective glitter stairway worthy of Disco
Broadway left over from the hotel's days as the Weggis Casino,
you know you’re in for something unique. Pink themed reception
desk, darkened hallway of jungle animal patterned carpets interrupted
by orb statuary, the design manages to just skirt the risk of garishness
to achieve a rather cool calm charm. Each of the POHO’s 45 rooms
face out on Lake Lucerne with terrace balconies from where one can watch
the paddle-wheel steamers and daily scheduled lake cruise boats arrive
and depart across the Dorfstrasse which runs through town along the lake
shore with the misty alpine mountains as background (see William
Tell Express Scenic Rail and Cruise).
Each of the rooms is equipped with Flatscreen TV, GenevaLab sound system
with iPod
docking
station, Blu-Ray dvd player, PlayStation 3 and rainshowers.
The
POHO Post Hotel Weggis has 4 restaurants and bars, the lime-green and
violet themed dining lounge with contemporary gourmet menu where
the hotel breakfast is also served, the intimate Wine Cellar where
one can enjoy the massive wine collection, the POHO Bar with lake views
and
a nightly DJ, in summer the Lakeside Terrace Bar and the historic old
Weggiser Stubli for classic Swiss dishes. The Gym and Spa Wellness
area maintains the design theme with a black swimming pool which serves
as
a projection screen where the sensual 
figures
of Schatz’ water
nymphs seem to come alive in the ripples. For the kids a fully stocked
game room reformed from the original reception area can keep them busy,
even if they want to practice future hotelier skills. The Lakeside Center
provides for boat rental for personal lake cruising, lake taxi, water-skiing
or wakeboard as well as mountain bikes for exploring the lake shore and
hillsides. "Dinner on the Lake" and mountain picnic packages
can be arranged. The aerial cable car to Rigi Kaltbad and Mt Rigi is
5 minutes from the
hotel, or the Mt Rigibahn cog railway is a short bus ride or one Lake
Lucerne cruise boat stop away in Vitznau.
There
is no rail line along the shore of Lake Lucerne, to get to the Post
Hotel Weggis is a 30 minute drive from Lucerne, by bus from the
nearest rail stops at Kussnacht or Brunnen, or perhaps most especially
by the boats of the Lake Lucerne cruises which depart from Lucerne
throughout the day from April through October. The POHO makes for a
romntic way
