It’s Munich’s Blue Year

King Ludwig image2011 marks the 125th anniversary of “Mad” King Ludwig II’s death and the 100th anniversary of the first publishing of the artistic milestone almanac volume "Der Blaue Reiter" (the Blue Rider) by the artists Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. The Bavaraian born style began the famous Blue Rider artist group, whose landscapes and subjects were particularly influenced by the moody hues of the Oberbayern valleys, also beloved by the palace building king (see Linderhof Palace and Neuschwanstein Fantasy Castle). Both Ludwig and the painters had a fascination with the color blue. Ludwig II was born in Munich in the palace of Nymphenburg (see Nymphenburg Palace & Gardens) surrounded by the royal blue of the Wittelsbachs.

Munich Residenz PalaceDuring the "Blue Year 2011," Munich visitors guests are invited to follow in King Ludwig II’s footsteps through his royal capital with walking and bus tours in Munich as well as a royal opera tour. Exhibitions held in Munich include “Arcadia Under Glass” theme in the Residenz Palace (see Residence Palace Treasures) and the reopening of the freshly polished royal apartments at Nymphenburg. To honor the Blue Rider artists, walking tours on Munich with visit their gathering places, capped by a special guided tour of the Pinakothek Modern Art Gallery (see Munich Pinokotheks) as well as special exhibitions at Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See, and the Blue Rider haven, Castle Museum in Murnau (see Murnau Castle Art) just an hour outside of Munich.

The tours are arranged through the Munich Tourist Office which offers a variety of themed tours around Munich. Tours available feature general tourist overviews and specific themes tours, covering Viktualienmarkt, the Königsplatz, Olympic Park, Schloss Nymphenburg, Schwabing and Ludwigstrasse, the Feldherrnhalle, Englischer Garten, Maximilianstrasse shopping, and the Deutsches Museum. © Bargain Travel Europe
