A romantic escape. Peace and tranquility in the glorious Swiss landscape of farm meadows and mountain ranges in the traditions historic Swiss chalet. The Hostellerie Bon Accueil, originally a farmhouse built in 1756 is all you’d expect of a family run country hotel which was once a home to spies. Really. Located in the hillides above the picturesque village of Chateau D’Oex, famous for its hot air balloons, (see Balloon Festival Chateau D’Oex) along the route of the Golden Pass panoramic train, this historic Swiss hotel was first turned from its farm origins into a lodging by a former agent of the British Secret Service, who first began renting out rooms to friends from the BBC. It has since changed hands a few times and rediscovered a personal touch.
Rich in rustic charm, with its own gourmet restaurant, herb gardens and a perfect base for exploring the Gstaad-Sannenland region which lies between Lake Geneva and Interlaken, not far from Gruyeres with its cheese factory (see Gruyeres Cheese Tour) and chocolate and the snowy heights of Glacier 3000 aerial cable (see Glacier 3000 Les Diableret). Step out the door for scenic walks in the pine woods of the pre-Alps slopes and through pasture lands of alpine flowers with the distant tinkling of cow bells as farmers bring their herds from the mountain meadows, or in winter, covered in a blanket of pristine white blanket of snow in a Swiss winter wonderland. In the village, if you miss the festival, stop at the Hot Air Balloon Museum or the L'Enhaut Cultural Museum with its Decoupage collection.
The rooms in both the original old chalet building and newer section are decorated in all wood furnishings reflecting the country style, spiced with authentic antique furniture from the region. The restaurant which takes up a portion of the second floor offers a romantic candle-lit dining room with an open fire band personal service from the owners who make you feel as welcome as guests at home. A seasonal menu of Mediterranian and local tastes accompanied by a select wine list of Swiss and world wines. Gather for a drink in the cozy Cellar Bar, or settle in a comfy stuffed chair in the Salon for tea, reading or a game of cards. In summer both lunch and dinner are served in the garden under the magnificent views.
The Hostellerie Bon Accueil is a three stars property which has won a number of awards and is a member of the Swiss Historic Hotels Group HotellerieSuisse (Swiss Hotel Association), Historic Hotels of Europe and is listed in numerous travel guides like Michelin and Fodor’s. The Hostellerie Bon Accueil is located about 3 miles from the center of Chateau D’Oex and the train station. There is free parking if you have a car. If traveling by train, you can make arrangements to be picked up and dropped off. Pets are welcome and one child under 12 can stay for free in an extra bed. © Bargain
