German expatriate movie star Marlene Dietrich once described the famed Kurhaus Casino in Baden-Baden as is "the most beautiful casino in the world" for with grand elegant La Belle Epoch architecture style. It is also the oldest casino in the country, located in the heart of the old town beside the Festspielhaus, Europe’s second largest opera house and concert hall. For an elegant evening on grand old world style take in a concert and late nite supper at the casino. During the day explore the cultural history of the Baden-Baden Cultural Mile with its Frieder Burda Museum, Brahms House, and Roman Bath Ruins. In the late autumn, the Christmas Market of Baden-Baden is one of the highlights of the holiday season.

Here, along the Black Forest mountains the Rhine River forms the natural boundary between France and Germany, and Baden-Baden is within easy reach of the Alsace region of France for visiting the vineyards and the cities of Strasbourg and Colmar, while the little farther afield Heidelberg and Saarland, or to the south Lake Constance and Switzerland. The Black Forest National Park is a matter of minutes by car along the Black Forest Scenic Route (Schwarzwaldhochstrasse), which starts in Baden-Baden and winds through stunning natural views across the Rhine valley to the Vosges mountains. Take a day trip to the half-timbered houses in Gengenbach and a visit to the “fools museum” (see Gengenbach Fools), or stop at the Open-Air farm museum “Vogtsbauernhöfe” in Gutach or Germany’s highest waterfall in Triberg. Take a day with the kids to one of Europe’s major theme parks, Europe Park in Rust, just a stone’s throw. © Bargain Travel Europe
