MOZART GETS A BIRTHDAY PARTY IN AUGSBURG
He doesn’t sound a day over 230

Bavarian Augsburg proclaims itself the “German Mozart City”. And though the composer noted for his impossibly intricate and whimsically dark musical operas left his mark on many European cities, only Augsburg has statues dedicated to two Mozarts. Wolfgang Amadeus’ music teacher and overbearing father Leopold Mozart was born in Augsburg. After the family left the city for proud dad to take his prodigy son on tour through Europe, performing in the salons of the aristrocracy - the Joe Jackson (father of the “gloved one”) of his day, they returned to the city many times for performances. It was during a 1777 visit that Wolfgang Amadeus began a love affair with his cousin, Maria Anna Thekla Mozart, and the famous "Bäsle letters" were written to her.

May events and performances offered include two weeks of the 55th German Mozart Festival – May 12-28, the 6th International Violin Competition Leopold Mozart, a competition featuring the most talented young violinists from around the world - May 17-28. The Long Night of Mozart on the 20th offers performances at authentic venues in the heart of the city and along the Maximilianstrasse with more than a hundred offerings of music and literature in one night, visitors are invited to stroll the impressive city center and discover Mozart's roots.

If you can’t get there until summer, listen to open air performances ranging from classical to jazz. July 21-23 at the Fronhof, the former residence of the Bishop of Augsburg, where a monument to father Mozart and son stands. And you know Wolgang Amadeus Mozart would be totally into jazz.

Augsburg is easily reachable from Munich in about a half hour by train or car. And the other Mozart city (of Austria) Salzburg is about an hour the other way. I would expect they’re thowing a party too... © Bargain Travel Europe
