MOZART
IN AUGSBURG

Bavarian
Augsburg proclaims itself the “German Mozart City”. And
though the composer noted for his impossibly intricate and whimsically
dark musical operas left his mark on many European cities, only Augsburg
has statues dedicated to two Mozarts. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s music
teacher and overbearing father, Leopold Mozart, was born in Augsburg.
After the family left this city on Romantic Road (see Romantic
Road Touring ) for the proud dad to take his prodigy son on tour through
Europe, performing

-
the
Joe Jackson (father of the “gloved one”) of his day, they
returned to the city many times for performances. It was during a 1777
visit that Wolfgang Amadeus began a love affair with his cousin, Maria
Anna Thekla Mozart, and the famous "Bäsle letters" were
written to her.
May events and performances include two weeks of the German Mozart
Festival. If you can’t
get there until summer, listen to open air performances ranging from classical
to jazz at the Fronhof, the former residence of the Bishop
of Augsburg, where a monument to father Mozart and son stands. And
you know Wolgang Amadeus Mozart would be totally into jazz.
Augsburg
is easily reachable from Munich in about a half hour plus by train
or car. The other Mozart
cities are in Austria, Salzburg where the composer was born and grew
is about two hours the other way (see Mozart's
Birth House) and where Leopold is buried along with Mozart's
wife Contanze (see Mozart
Graves St Sebastiens Cemetery) and
Vienna, where the musical prodigy became famous (see Mozart
Concerts) and died
a pauper (see Where
Mozart Died) is about four hours . © Bargain
