EURAIL SELECT PASS WITHOUT FRANCE
How to get around Europe with France Not Included

Update: France is once again included in the Select Pass

For a few months France had disincluded itsefl from teh Eurail Select pass, but has once again joined the program. The Select Pass is the most cost effective and most popular option of rail pass that allows the choice of number of days travel and a select number of bordering countries, rather than the more expensive Global Pass with unlimited travel days, but selection of countries.

France is a big block right in the middle of Europe, but if you needed to get around without including it in a multi-country pass - the bordering countries of France for Eurail are Germany, Switzerland, Benelux (Belgium, Luxemburg and Netherlands), Ireland, Italy and Spain. In the past, to include Ireland or Spain (and Portugal) in a Select Pass it would be easy to have France included. Without France, Spain officially borders Italy (by ferry) and Ireland officially borders Benelux. You can choose those as bordering countries for the purpose of a Select Pass, but to actually get from one to the other, you’d be crossing France or the UK, which would require point to point rail tickets, a separate country pass for those sections, or maybe a budget airline flight for a flyover. To get through France you could purchase an individual TGV ticket (see TGV France) and could still take the Eurostar with the Rail Pass Discount. Or you could make France your rental car drive through country (see Renting a Car in Europe).

You activate a Eurail pass at a train station ticket window before you can start using it. You begin travel when you write in the first travel day.
France will still be an option in the Global Rail Pass and the France Country Pass will still be available, but for the budget conscious adding a significant cost to visiting the land of wine, escargot and rude Parisian waiters. © Bargain Travel Europe
