LIVERPOOL - BEATLES TOWN FOREVER
Mathew Street Cavern Club and Beatles Everywhere
In
2008, Liverpool is the Culture Capital of Europe, but since the 1960s,
the city on the Mersey River has been the capital of The Beatles and
will always be the mecca of the Fab Four. In August 2007 the 50th Anniversary
of the Cavern Club where famed “mop-top” rock
group began their rise was celebrated. Even if you couldn't make the
anniversary, Liverpool remains the town where the “Fab Four” originated
with lots of opportunity to celebrate 20th Century’s most idolized
rock band. The Mathew Street Music Festival every year is the largest
free
to the public
annual music event in Europe the last weekend of August.
John,
Paul, George and Ringo will live forever in the alley of 10 Mathew
Street where the Cavern
Club can be found much as
it was when the Beatles played to packed houses and still going with
regular
live
music
performances
in its underground brick cave bar ambiance. The actual original basement
cellar was destroyed but the bricks used to rebuild it
doorstop
away. Pose for a photograph with John Lennon, or at least his bronze
stature, languidly
loafing
across
the alley from the club entrance, next to the Liverpool Wall
of Fame, featuring a marker for every Liverpool music group that had
a number
one hit, more than any other city in the world. At the From
Me To You shop in Mathew Street
find the largest variety of officially licensed Beatles, Apple Music,
John Lennon and Yellow Submarine memorabilia merchandise. In the fall
of 2007 the Hard
Days Night Hotel is to open at the end of Mathew Street
for those who want to live, eat and sleep the Beatles.
Visit the Casbah
Coffee Club in West Darby, now an English Heritage building where the Beatles first
appeared
and the only Beatles tourist
destination unchanged since its ceilings were painted by the members
of the group. Take the Magical
Mystery Tour, a two hour bus tour winding
through the lives of the Beatles, visiting their homes and schools as
well as the places that inspired some of the band’s most memorable
songs like “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields Forever”.
The tour finishes at the Cavern Club.
Not
enough Beatles, yet. Oh, no, your “Hard Days Night” has
only begun. Head to the Albert Dock (see Albert
Dock Merseyside Museums)
on the Mersey Riverfront to The
Beatles Story attraction at the Britannia Vaults. The Beatles
Story is a walk through maze of exhibit rooms taking you through an atmospheric
journey
through the life & times, the culture and music of The Beatles. Here
you can compare the Mathew Steet Cavern Club to a full size replica recreated
here. Walk through the Yellow Submarine and get a look behind the scenes
of
Abbey
Road Studios. George Harrison’s first guitar is on display along
with other memorabilia. An audio guide is narrated by John Lennon’s
sister, Julia, lending personal insights, and contributions of remembrances
by George Martin, Brian Epstein and Sir Paul himself.
There are lots of other Beatles
sites and venues all around Liverpool, from official guided tours,
private
tours, bars they drank in, a statue
of Eleanore Rigby, The Liverpool School of Arts where Sir Paul McCartney
studued and still supports, The White Star Pub, even the National Trust
gets into the act watching over the
childhood
homes
of John Lennon
and Paul
McCartney
at Mendips & 20
Forthlin Road where the core of the group first lived,
composed and rehearsed. © Bargain
