SCHLOSS EGGERSBERG - CASTLE HOTEL
Romantic Renaissance in the Altmuhltal

Schloss Eggersberg Castle Hotel Germany photoThe Schloss Eggersberg Castle Hotel near Reidenberg is a German Renaissance crenellated residence castle set in the low rolling hills of the Altmühl Valley Park, the area known for its natural beauty around the Altmühl River which flows into the Danube near Regensburg in north Bavaria. The river cuts through chasms in the steeps hills of the Frankish Alb and the lower valley was once a thick forest, though now a patchwork of farm fields and thick woods. Fursten Zimmer Suite photoThe castle as it now stands is the New Eggersberg Castle, a residence castle built in 1604 by Wilhelm v. Eggersberg when appointed a minister for Bavarian Elector Maximillian, which served as a Hofburg Castle or courthouse until the 1850s. The original old castle of Eggersberg in the dense forests had a long history in the valley as a base for robber knights raiding the trade routes from Nuremberg to Ingolstadt in the 13th and 14th centuries. The old castle suffered heavy damage in the 30 Years War, parts of it's stone walls are still in the woods on the grounds near the current structure of the late German Renaissance.

Hotel Schloss Eggersberg

Renaissance Zimmer Suite accomodation photoThe hotel at the romantic and charming Schloss Eggersberg has 11 double rooms and suites upstairs within the castle, cozy and evocative of an old world life style. The suites are designed with individual theme flavorings, chose from the Renaissance Suite, the germanic Electors Suite or French provincial Louis XVI suite. All the rooms have views into the valley green. The restaurant at Schloss Eggersberg features a good earth cuisine of healthy cooking based on old world influences in a style referred to as “Culinaria Antiqua”, Eggersberg Castlke Theater photoavailable in cozy nooks and wood beamed dining rooms, or the more private wine cellar. The Castle Eggersberg is popular for weddings and events and has a conference center for large groups in the old barn. On the top floor of the attic is actually a theater where occasional touring or local performances are held. The German actor Gert Fröbe from “Goldfinger" and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” performed on its thick boards. Why not write that play you've always wanted to and bring your own troop of family players to put on a show? The hotel staff can arrange guided tours or area activities.

Old Carriages Hofmark Museum photoThe Castle Eggersberg offers a peaceful country setting in the natural wild, a private garden and the nearby Main-Danube canal which connects the two rivers across the European watershed divide. Old historic canal locks still exist. The woods around the castle are the habitat for birds and game. The rolling hills of the Altmuhltal was the upper reach of the Roman Empire known as the Limes “limit”, with ancient Roman and Celtic sites along the “Limes Road” (see German Limes Route). The park of the Altmühltal provides ample opportunities for nature activities, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, canoeing on the river, also with easy reach are the medieval towns of Regensburg, Ingolstadt with the Audi Factory Tour and the Bavarian Military Museum (see Ingolstadt Castle Army Museum) or Nuremberg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber are a bit farther (see Medieval Rothenburg). If you have kids, a few kilometers away Schloss Rosenburg has a daily falconry show and the factory museum of famous German Teddy Bear maker Steiff is also not far (see Steiff Factory Museum).

Eggersberg Romantic Nook Table photoSince 1962 the castle has been owned by Dr. Robert Weigand, a founder of the Bavarian State Monument Council. A life-long collector, Dr. Weigand established the Hofmark Museum within the castle with art and artifacts of history and archeology, many found on or near the site. The hotel of Schloss Eggersberg is managed by English speaking husband and wife team, Renate and Michael Schwarz with a personal touch. Room rates including breakfast, run from 85€ to 185€. The Schloss Eggersberg is part of the Culture-Castles group of historic castle hotels in Germany and the Netherlands, located about an hour by car north from Munich a few country roads off the A9 autobahn. © Bargain Travel Europe
