The Glacier Express with nights in Zermatt, the charming old world no vehicle village at the foot of the world’s most recognized mountain, the Matterhorn (see Matterhorn Museum) and St. Moritz, the original elegant resort playland of the jet set. This 3 day and 2 Nights Tour arranged by Avanti Destinations and available through travel agents is perhaps not an entire trip on its own unless you extend your stays in the Swiss Alps resort towns at either end of the journey, but can be an addition to other plans for your trip to Switzerland. The itinerary can be planned in either direction. Most commonly journeys begin in Zermatt, but more seats can be available starting in St Moritz.

One night in Zermatt hotel in your choice of three, four or five offered accommodation. Day 1 - St. Moritz

Arrive in St. Moritz by train from any Swiss border or airport and enjoy a day at your leisure to explore this beautiful town. St. Moritz lies on the south side of the Alps, in the Engadine Valley – six thousand feet above sea level. St. Moritz is influenced by three cultures: those of the German speaking majority of its residents, the Romansch speaking population of the Engadine and the nearby Italians. Journey time from Zurich airport is approximately 4 hours. To come from Italy, the train travels from --- via the Bernina Pass (see Bernina Express Alps) offering another scenic journey.

Day 2 – Glacer Express

One of the most famous trains in the world, the Glacier Express provided a stunning panoramic trip through the Alps in the heart of Switzerland, making an 8 hour railway journey across 291 bridges, through 91 tunnels and across the Oberalp Pass at 6,670 feet in altitude. The Glacier Express (see Swiss Rail Glacier Express) travels a beautiful route between the sights of the Graubünden holiday region, central Switzerland, the sunny Valais region with its glacier landscape, and the beautiful regions of the south, through Brig and up the – valley to Zermatt. Travel in comfort through the unspoiled natural beauty of a landscape rich in ancient, fragrant mountain forests, peaceful Alpine meadows, rushing mountain streams and mountain valleys, soaked in tradition and centuries old culture. You arrive in Zermatt at the foot of the majestic crag of the Matterhorn to find yourself in a world without automobiles as electric-carts and horse-drawn sleighs are the only vehicles allowed.

Day 3 - Zermatt

After breakfast check out of the hotel and leave your bags so you can stay to explore Zermatt. Maybe take an excursion to see the Matterhorn for a breathtaking (literally in the thin air!) up close view (see Klein Matterhorn Cable) with a 360° panoramic vista of the Swiss, Italian and French Alps and the world’s highest glacier palace, or the leisurely scenic steep cog train to the Gornergrat Glacier (see Gornergrat Matterhorn Railway) before departing the city. Afetr your three days, transfer by train to any Swiss airport for your flight home or any Swiss border to continue you vacation experience. Travel time to Geneva is approximately 3 ½ hours through the new Lotschburg Tunnel.

A Swiss Transfer Ticket is included providing for a two transportations trips – to and from - a Swiss airport or border town to a single Swiss destination for less money than point-to-point tickets. The Swiss Transfer Ticket also offers a 50% discount on additional excursions purchased locally. Each transfer direction must be completed in one day and allows a month to complete the entire trip.
