HOTEL PILATUS KULM - MT PILATUS
Historic Mountain Top Hotel above Lucerne Restored

Pilatus Kulm Mountain Summit Hotel photoMount Pilatus rises with its snow-capped peak in the near distance above Lucerne in central Switzerland, only about an hour and half to reach the top by amazing cable ride or the world’s steepest funicular cog train (see Mt Pilatus). On the summit at 7,000 feet nestled a short distance apart by the narrow summit are two hotels, the modernistic Bellevue and the historic Pilatus Kulm built in 1890 with other Swiss mountain top “Kulm” hotels captured the imagination of the grand touring class, though not as altitudinous as the Kulm Hotel on Gorergrat (see Gornergrat Kulm). Queen Victoria herself once rested her royal head on a pillow at the Pilatus Kulm and supped in its dining room with window views of snow clinging to craggy cliffs. The Kulm was also a little perhaps too cozy with old style non-ensuite rooms, but has been completely renovated.

Pilatus Kulm Hotel Alps View Cafe photoHotel Pilatus-Kulm is a historic heritage monument that presents as a 3 star superior hotel with a range of 27 rooms in modern alpine style and three suites, all with magnificent views. The vista of Lake Lucerne below to the north and the peaks of the central Swiss Alps to the south. On a clear night, a stay at the Pilatus-Kulm could resemble the setting of a dramatic Wagnerian tale of of Valhalla. Richard Wagner was one of the many illustrious guests of the classic old hotel while living below on the edge of Lake Lucerne (see Wagner Museum Lake Lucerne).

Gueen Victoria Restaurant photoThe hotel’s Queen Victoria Restaurant was named in honor of British monarch who rode up the mountian on horseback rather than the more convenient cable car now connected to the hotel through the brand new Panorama Gallery, opened on the mountain top in June of 2011. The hotel restaurant features Helvetic (Swiss) cuisine featuring market-fresh local produce hauled up the mountain daily for indoors window views among the traditionl stonework walls, or in clear weather enjoyed on the terrace in the crisp mountain air. The Pilatus Kulm is popular for business conferences in a mountain retreat setting with its Business Centre is for workshops, meetings and seminars. A visit down the stairs to the modern conference space allows a look at the foundation of the hotel set into the mountain top stone. And even the rest rooms carry the theme of the legenday Pilatus Dragon and a curious special surprise, with a look even if you don‘t have business to conduct. © Bargain Travel Europe
