HITCHCOCK HOUSE - KENSINGTON
London Thriller - Hitchcock Slept Here

Hitchcock Historic Plaque London Kensington photoFootsteps fall on a dark street. It’s late at night in London. You’ve stayed out late with London’s new late drinking hours and you think maybe you’re being followed. You take another "39 Steps" and wonder if you’re "The Man Who Knew Too Much". Are you being chased by a "Secret Agent" or just your "Notorious" reputation. Wait a minute, you’re standing in front of the Hitchcock house! Ever wonder where the famous film director and master of suspense got his inspiration. Before moving to Hollywood and making his American studio films beginning with"Shadow of a Doubt", Hitch's early career was in the London film-making world.

The Turner House where Alfred Hitchcock lived in London photoIt’s mostly forgotten by the casual passer-by, but on a busy thoroughfare in Kensington is the row house Sir Alfred Hitchcock lived from 1926 util 1939, during his formative London film-making period before being discovered by the moguls of Hollywood just before the start of World War II. Now, just another slightly run-down building of rental flats, officially known as The Turner House and identified by a English Heritage plaque, the house is sandwiched in a block of Cromwell Road between The Derby Hotel and the Kensington Marriot Hotel. The Derby Hotel, decent but decidedly “Tourist Class” notes its famous neighbor in its marketing material, the Marriot does not.

Stay at the Marriott London Kensington or Derby Hotel Kensington

For a more in-depth Hitchcock journey there is a Hitchcock Walk given by Sandra Shevey, a film historian who interviewed the director and encompassing the Cromwell apartment and London locations from some of Alfred Hitchcock's films like "Frenzy" and "The Man Who Knew Too Much". If you’re visiting London and have a lot of sightseeing stops to make, try a London Pass. Or you're in a London mystery mood take a Jack the Ripper Tour available from Rail Europe. ©Bargain Travel Europe
