WATSON! THE BREW IS AFOOT!
The Sherlock Holmes Pub

Sherlock Holmes Pub London phtotLiterary mystery fans must not miss having a pint at The Sherlock Holmes Restaurant & Pub in London. 221B Baker Street is just an address in fiction, but to soak in real Sherlockiana and have a meal with Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective, or at least his many guises which adorn the walls, get a table at this London landmark. A few blocks from Trafalgar Square on Northumberland Street (see also Tattershall Castle Steamer Pub) around the corner from Charing Cross Station and across the street from Old Scotland Yard .

The Sherlock Holmes Pub has been around since 1957 and boasts a re-creation of the Holmes and Watson Baker Street rooms study next to the restaurant. The display is one left over from a Holmes World Festival. Holmes was of course a fiction character and never seemed to visit a London pub, yet locals gather at happy hour on the street outside to bend an elbow and jaw about the latest mystery of day’s daily news. Congregating outside pubs in London is a common scene since the smoking ban chased London imbibers outdoors. But with London’s notorious weather don’t forget your deerstalker cap and your Brolly. © Bargain Travel Europe

LONDON THRILLER – HITCHCOCK SLEPT HERE

Footsteps fall on a dark street. It’s late at night in London. You’ve stayed out late with London’s new late drinking hours and you think maybe you’re being followed. You take another 39 Steps and wonder if you’re The Man Who Knew Too Much. Are you being chased by a Secret Agent or just your Notorious reputation. Wait a minute, you’re standing in front of the Hitchcock house! Ever wonder where the famous film director and master of suspense got his inspiration.

It’s not on any tour and mostly forgotten, but on a busy thoroughfare in Kensington is the row house Sir Alfred Hitchcock lived in during his formative London film-making period before being discovered by the moguls of Hollywood after the war. Now, just another slightly run-down building of rental flats, officially The Turner House and identified by a English Heritage plaque, the house is sandwiched in a block of Cromwell Road between The Derby Hotel and the Kensington Marriot Hotel.

The Derby Hotel, decent but decidedly “Tourist Class” notes its famous neighbor in its marketing material, the Marriot does not.
